Questions to ask before a loft conversion

Whilst our teams are dedicated to making your loft conversion perfect, there are a few things that need to be considered before you take the plunge into making your loft into an extra bedroom.

Firstly, can you afford it?

A common mistake we find is that clients want to complete a loft conversion as cheaply as possible and often skip out on creating a staircase for the home extension, which in turn decreases the value of the loft space. Without proper access there is no way that the space can be used to its full capacity, even if you are extending your loft just to create an extra room that won’t be in use at all times, when it comes to selling your house – which will inevitably happen at some point – the loft will not count as extra living space and you will not get any more for it.

Are you planning on a bathroom in your loft?

If you are planning to make your loft into a bedroom it is very common for clients to also want a bathroom as this gives the bedroom an added privacy, doing this can add an extra cost but from our testimonials you can see that often it is worth it.

Do you have enough space?

Not all lofts are suitable for a conversion, regardless of who is intending to live in the room we always recommend our clients to see the room as a double and work around the idea that a double bed must fit in the room. Where will the bed go? Does it have enough roof space for someone to get in and out of the bed comfortably from each side?

How soundproofed is the new room?

Noise pollution in homes is a cause for arguments amongst families and housemates alike. A simple shout test may be the answer here, but also things like footsteps and other noises will need to be tested out before you begin the conversion to work out whether the room will need to be soundproofed. Whilst this sounds like an expensive decision it will, much like other things, pay off in the long run and it will be much simpler to do whilst the loft conversion is underway rather than afterwards.

Is there enough light?

Typically lofts do not have windows in them already but the slanted roof makes it perfect for having a skylight fitted. This is a popular choice for most of our customers as they want to make the most of the light available, not to mention the opportunity for stargazing!

How much storage do you need?

More often than not, lofts are used for storage before they are converted and sometimes there’s just no where else for the things that were previously stored to go. Now, depending on the size of your loft and the volume of items you need to store you can continue to use the room as storage as well as a bedroom or living space for someone. This is something you need to consider before making any movements toward getting your loft converted as there’s no use in converting a room that will be filled to the brim with stuff. Speak to a member of our team of how we can incorporate storage into your conversion. This is just a short list of the things that you should consider before going ahead with the best investment in your home you’ll ever make!
